Rikugien, one of the two great gardens of Edo, was built by Yoshiyasu Yanagisawa, a close aide of the Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, on the order of the shogun, who dug a pond and built a mountain. This is a “circular style rock garden with spring water” that has been built over many years. The scenic beauty of Wakanoura in Kishu, scenic spots mentioned in waka poems, and landscapes from classical China are reflected in the 88 Landscapes. It was opened to the public in 1932, and was designated as a national special scenic spot on March 31, 1952.
