How did it come about?

Nijo Market is said to have its origins in the early Meiji era when fishermen from Ishikari Beach went up the Ishikari River and sold fresh fish in this area. Some of the fish sellers who were originally located on Nishi 1-chome on the opposite bank of the Soseigawa River opened stores on the east side across the Soseigawa River, forming the “Jusan Association” of 13 shops, and the beginning of today’s Nijo Market.
