    Facilities of Okurayama Jump Stadium

Sapporo is the largest city in the northern region, with a population of 1.9 million.
The Okurayama Jump Stadium, which overlooks the cityscape and the distant horizon, is also known as the location where the jumping competition was held at the Sapporo Winter Olympics in 1972. Today, it is fully equipped with modern facilities for summer and night jumps, and many international jumping competitions are held here.

    The charm of Okurayama

Okurayama was the venue for the 1972 Winter Olympics in Sapporo.
From the top of the streamlined jumping platform built along the ridgeline of the mountain, you can see a panoramic view of Sapporo city, and you can fully enjoy the night view of Sapporo, which has been selected as one of Japan’s new top three night views.

Unfading memories and thoughts – The legacy of the Sapporo Olympics

The Sapporo Olympics were held in 1972 (Showa 47). Okurayama Jump Stadium was the venue for one of the competitions held at that time, the 90m class ski jump (now known as Large Hill).
The 90m ski jump class was held on the sixth day of the competition. With Japanese athletes dominating the podium in the 70m class held earlier at Miyanomori Jump Stadium, expectations throughout Japan were pinned on Yukio Kasaya and the “Hinomaru Squadron”.

However, in the end, Kasatani finished 7th, the highest ranking Japanese player. The winner was Poland’s Wojciech Fortuna, who shared the podium with Walter Steiner (Switzerland) in second place and Rainer Schmidt (East Germany) in third place.
In fact, the Okurayama Jump Stadium was originally created out of the idea that a full-fledged schanze was needed in order to attract the Olympics.

For this reason, we selected Lieutenant Olaf Helsett, a world-renowned authority on the construction of schanzes and who had experience participating in the Olympics as a director, to select the construction site and design the site. It was about 40 years later that the Olympics were decided to be held in Sapporo. Okurayama Jump Stadium was the setting for the 1972 Sapporo Olympics, and you can still feel its history. At the same time, it also conveys the thoughts of the many people who worked hard to hold the Winter Olympics in Japan.

From the parking lot, take a long escalator to Okurayama Observation Deck, Sapporo Olympic Museum, and Sapporo Olympic Museum Annex, which reopened in May 2020. If you take the lift to the top of Mt. Okura, you will find an observation lounge where you can see the city of Sapporo, Ishikari Plain, and Ishikari Bay from an altitude of 307 meters. Another attraction is that you can see the start line of the jumping hill right in front of you. If you look down on the steep approach from above, you can feel the feelings of a competitive jumper.
After enjoying each of Okurayama’s facilities, you can enjoy creative French cuisine while admiring the wonderful scenery at Nouvelle Pouse Okurayama.

    Okurayama Observatory

From the observation lounge, you can see Odori Park stretching directly in front of you, and you can see many landmarks dotted around the city, such as Sapporo Dome and Hokkaido University. You can enjoy not only the vast panorama of the Ishikari Plain, but also Ishikari Bay and the mountains in the distance, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the seasonal nature and the cityscape of Sapporo.
In addition, you can see Miyanomori Schanze from the rooftop of the observation deck, and enjoy the scenery from the perspective of a jumping athlete on the normal hill (K point 90m).

    Two person lift

The observation deck is accessed by a two-person lift, which is also used by competitive ski jumpers. It takes about 5 minutes to reach the observation deck while feeling the steep approach and the railroad crossing called Kante. While feeling like a competitive ski jumper, don’t forget to enjoy the immersive view of Sapporo that expands the higher you go.
