Along with the night view from Mt. Hakodate, this slope is often introduced as a view spot of Hakodate. It is said that Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine once stood at the top of this slope, which is where the name comes from.
If you go past the waterfront lined with red brick warehouses, you will reach Hachimanzaka, which will lead you to Mt. Hakodate. Stairs with handrails are installed on both sides of the walkway to the top of the slope, and road heating is applied to the walkway in winter.

At the end of the road is Hakodate Nishi High School, which is known for being attended by Saburo Kitajima, a great figure in the enka world. The view from directly below is spectacular, and it once gained acclaim as the filming location for a scene in a commercial in which an elderly couple skips while holding hands, and is sometimes referred to as the “Charmy Green Slope.”

It is said that the name of the slope originates from the location of Hakodate Hachimangu Shrine, which was relocated from the site of Masamichi Kono’s mansion (near present-day Motomachi Park). Although it was moved to the current Yachigashira town in 1880 (Meiji 13) after being damaged by a large fire, the name of the slope remained.

It is said that it used to be curved, but now it is a beautiful road that goes straight towards the sea. It is one of the most popular slopes in Hakodate, with a view of the Seikan Ferry Memorial Museum Mashu Maru, which is moored and exhibited at the port. In winter, the street trees and stone pavements are beautifully illuminated by the Hakodate Illumination. Enjoy the scenery that changes depending on the season and time of your visit through your camera’s viewfinder.

The trees along Yahatazaka, Nijukkenzaka, and Kaiko Dori (Hakodate Meijikan-mae to Nijukken Sakashita), which connect Hakodate Station to the Bay Area, are illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere. One of the most popular views is the view overlooking the port from the top of Hachimanzaka, and the combination with the illuminated Mashu Maru in front makes for a picturesque view.
The sidewalks of Hachimanzaka are road heated, so you can walk comfortably and safely even when it snows.
