Things to do in Noboribetsu ： Noboribetsu Onsen Jigokudani

“Noboribetsu no Yu” was born from the remains of an explosion crater.

Jigokudani is the largest source of hot springs in Noboribetsu Onsen, a representative hot spring area in Hokkaido. There are 15 hells, including the Great Hell, on the 450m diameter valley floor, and 3,000 liters of water gushes out every minute. Noboribetsu Onsen is described as a “hot spring department store” and has many hot springs, which is rare in the world. Around Jigokudani are Oyunuma, where the surface temperature is 40 to 50 degrees Celsius, Mt. Hiyori, which has white smoke rising from its peak and is known as a famous spot for alpine plants, and the Noboribetsu Primeval Forest.

There is a promenade that takes you around Jigokudani in about 20 minutes, and you can walk around it from the Noboribetsu Park Service Center near the parking lot. There is also a promenade along the way that takes you to the Oyunuma Observation Deck in about 30 minutes, so be sure to take a look. The contrast between the normally contradictory autumn leaves and Jigoku Valley has become a hot topic as it creates a chaotic worldview that looks great on social media.

Onibi no Michi is a promenade that runs from the entrance of Jigokudani to Tetsusen Pond, and is dimly lit every night at night, creating a very magical feeling!

History of Noboribetsu Jigokudani

The history of Noboribetsu Jigokudani dates back approximately 10,000 years, and remains as the remains of an explosion crater from the eruption of an active volcano called Kasayama. It is said that about 200 years ago, Mt. Hiyori, Oyunuma, and the Ura Jigoku Crater Row were active, forming the current Noboribetsu Jigokudani.
Noboribetsu Jigokudani is widely known as a scenic spot not only in Hokkaido but also in Japan. In 200, it was selected as one of the “100 Best Scented Sceneries”, in 2004 as a “Hokkaido Heritage”, and in 2010 as one of the “100 Famous Places for Autumn Leaves in Japan”.
