“Sugatami Pond Tour Course” where you can fully enjoy the charm of Mt. Asahidake

Mount Asahidake is located in the Daisetsuzan mountain range in Hokkaido and is one of Japan’s 100 famous mountains, boasting an altitude of 2291 meters. Ride the ropeway from Sanroku Station and in about 10 minutes you will arrive at Sugatami Station, which is 1,600 meters above sea level. From here, there is a hiking route called the Sugatami Pond Tour Course, which is approximately 1.7 km in length, and is popular as an easy course that even beginners can walk in about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Many tourists visit this area regardless of the season, as there are many places with open views and you can enjoy spectacular views of alpine plants and Mt. Asahidake.

Highlights that can be seen on the Sugatami Pond tour course

Spectacular views from the first observation deck
The first observation deck you will reach after exiting the course from Sugatami Station is the First Observation Deck. From there, you can see a beautiful view of Mt. Asahidake and the surrounding nature, and since it is relatively easy to get to, taking about 10 minutes, many tourists stop by with their cameras in hand.

Kagami-ike and Suribachi-ike couple ponds and a treasure trove of alpine plants

As you proceed further, you will come to a “couple pond” called Kagami Pond and Suribachi Pond surrounded by alpine plants. You can enjoy colorful alpine plants in this area, and around June, rhododendrons and Ezono-no-Ryukinka are in full bloom, a sight that delights the eyes of tourists. The pond, which is in harmony with the surrounding nature, is a spot that enhances the refreshing scenery of Mt. Asahidake.

Upside down reflection of Mt. Asahidake seen in Sugatami Pond

The highlight of the Sugatami Pond tour course is Sugatami Pond. When the snow melts, Mt. Asahidake is reflected upside down on the surface of the quiet pond, and this mystical sight is the origin of the name “Sugatami”. From this location, you can enjoy a spectacular natural beauty that is completely different from the view near the ropeway exit.
