Located in the middle of Hokkaido’s winter wonderland, the city of Otaru is an hour commute from Sapporo by train, making it an ideal destination for a romantic winter escape. With its beautiful canals, historic sights, and delicious local treats, Otaru offers a perfect blend of beauty and culture ideal for couples looking to enjoy a getaway. Here’s my personal guide to experiencing the best of Otaru in the winter season.
The Otaru Canal should be seen, even in winter. The old warehouses and gas lamps that line both sides of the canal can be so dreamy, magical, and near fairy-tale-like for those that love a cosy vibe. For winter, strolling along in the snow flanked streets and under the lantern lit canal has a romantic and peaceful atmosphere awaiting you. Along the river, you can enjoy the winter serenity while you snugly cuddle up with your partner or enjoy the walk by yourself.
The Otaru Music Box Museum is one of a kind and very charming. These handmade music boxes are intricately crafted, and they will transport you back in time with their sweet melodies. (My personal favourite are the Ghibli music boxes). This is the place where you and your partner can find beautiful and nostalgic items, and possibly even create a custom music box to remember your trip. It is quiet and romantic, where a moment can be shared.
A visit to Sankaku Market, more popularly known as Otaru Fish Market, offers an opportunity to taste the best of Hokkaido’s seafood. Winter is the best time when crab, oysters, and sea urchin are fresh catches. You can share a meal in one of the many seafood stalls serving sushi and grilled scallops. Warm and inviting, it’s a cozy stop during your winter exploration.
A walk through Otaru would not be complete without a view of the Otaru Steam Clock. This Victorian-style clock emits a puff of steam hourly and chimes a tune. It is a romantic landmark worth a quick stop and photo opportunity with your loved ones. The surrounding streets are lined with little shops and cafes, so take a moment to explore and enjoy the beauty of the city.
Treat yourselves to a scoop of Letao ice cream, LeTao is a local delicacy originating in Otaru. Letao is famous for its creamy, rich ice cream and other delicious desserts, with various flavours ranging from classic vanilla to seasonal fruits. Whether you are having it on one of those cold winter days or as a sweet treat in the middle of your exploration, it’s just what everyone needs.
For the ultimate romantic winter experience, stay in an onsen (hot spring) hotel instead of a regular hotel. There are many onsen hotels near the main city of Otaru and these Japanese hot spring hotels are a great way to relax after a day of sightseeing. You will be able to find onsen hotels in Otaru that boast beautiful outdoor onsen baths with views of the snow covered landscape. The natural waters are full of minerals and are known for their healing properties, making it an ideal place to relax. A number of onsen hotels also offer private baths, allowing couples a more personal experience.
