    CULTURE WORKSHOP Details

“Chirimen Crafts Museum” is a shop that collects chirimen craft accessories, from traditional items to unique miniature items. The main store in Arashiyama is located in an area surrounded by nature, including the scenery of Arashiyama and Hozukyo Gorge. The store is housed in a Japanese house that blends in with the surrounding environment, allowing you to enjoy the atmosphere of Kyoto even more.

At the Chirimen Crafts Museum, we focus on the chirimen material, which has long been loved especially in the Kansai region, and hope to convey the charm of the cuteness of the crafts and the charm of chirimen, which conveys the present. The light reflects on the embossed patterns of the crepe, creating a soft look. The embossed patterns, which are unique to chirimen, are created by weaving two types of threads alternately, with threads twisted left and right as the weft. When woven, the fabric is flat, but once it is refined (the process of washing away dirt from the threads), the unique unevenness and embossed patterns emerge, creating a breathtaking beauty.

It is said that this skillful weaving technique was introduced to Japan during the Tensho era (1573-1592), and in Kyoto, the city of kimonos, the light texture of the embossed patterns and the beautiful color of the dyeing were combined with the techniques of Yuzen dyeing, and the weaving production center was established in Tango, spreading the kimono culture unique to Kyoto throughout the country. A carefully woven and dyed kimono is passed down with great care from mother to daughter, and from daughter to grandchild. Of course, women also cherished and passed down kimono scraps from mother to daughter. In an era when sewing was considered a woman’s hobby, mothers would use these scraps to make bags out of the same fabric as the kimono or kimonos for dolls, passing on not only their needlework skills but also their appreciation of things. Now, after the passage of time, the “crafts” created by these unknown women are attracting attention again.
