At Kissa Koan, even those who have no experience can feel free to become a guest at a formal tea ceremony. Even first-timers can feel free to participate in the tea ceremony.

    Learn Tea Ceremony (Usucha)

    You will be a guest at a tea ceremony where the instructor will perform the formal tea ceremony. After purifying your hands and mouths in the “tsukubai” (bathtub), you will enter the tea room through a small entrance for guests called the “nijiriguchi” and enjoy the tea ceremony while following the proper etiquette for guests. You can sit upright except when drinking tea. The instructor will teach you all the etiquette and other details.

    Temae experience (light tea)

    “Temae” is the experience of being the host of a tea ceremony, wiping and cleaning the tea utensils in a formal way, making tea in the formal procedure, and “entertaining” the guests. The formal etiquette is very difficult, and beginners may have a hard time, but there is no other place where you can experience “temae” without being introduced to tea ceremony. Please learn well. The instructor will be right next to you and give you instructions – you can just follow along.
