About Oharibako’s Tsumami-zaiku

Tsumami-zaiku is a very simple item made from two things: a small square piece of cloth and glue. The job of the artisan is to finish it as beautifully as possible. We do not make the most beautiful hair ornament in Japan, but make the most beautiful hair ornament in Japan that makes the wearer look the most beautiful. That is our mission.
Unwavering commitment to MADE IN KYOTO from materials to production
Since we were founded in Nishijin, Kyoto as a thread shop 70 years ago, we have a strong commitment to selecting fabrics, etc. The fabric is pure silk pongee from Kyotango, which is dyed in a custom color with a brush-dyeing method. The tassels are also luxurious pure silk twisted tassels. The colors are matched to the skin and makeup of modern women to make their faces look beautiful. Everything is a commitment to making women look beautiful.

All processes from design to delivery are carried out in our own workshop.

By having a professional workshop and a store close to our customers, we are able to work together as one from design to manufacturing, sales, and delivery. This allows us to maintain high quality. You can also consult with us about custom orders and color orders (changing the color only).

A delicate contest of skills by a group of craftsmen

In the workshop, a hair ornament is completed by passing through the hands of craftsmen in each process. Starting with checking the dye, cutting, picking, and roofing, and finally completing the work after strict inspection. In today’s world, the number of craftsmen is decreasing year by year, but our company has formed a group of craftsmen and is working hard to train young craftsmen.

Experience making a tsumami-zaiku hairpin from an Oharibako

Pass through the courtyard, which is colored by the four seasons, and head to Hanare’s Kyoto townhouse. In a space away from the hustle and bustle, tsumami-zaiku is made using the same techniques as the craftsmen. It’s an experience we’re proud of and sure to enjoy.

Thanks to your support, the “Tsumami-zaiku Experience” has been running for over 10 years, with a total of over 10,000 people participating. The fabric used is the same habutae fabric used for maiko tsumami-zaiku. The dyeing is also done by hand in Kyoto, so the colors are very beautiful.
“Experience at a tsumami-zaiku specialty store” may sound difficult, but out of the more than 10,000 participants, not a single person has been unable to complete it! Clumsy people are welcome♪ Please feel free to join us.

Notes before applying

・Experience days are business days of the actual store. (Store closed every Wednesday, New Year’s holiday)

*There may be rare cases where the experience cannot be held due to special events or staff circumstances.

・Please apply by business hours on the business day before the desired experience date.

*Please apply by phone on the business day before the desired experience date.

・If there are more than 9 people, please consult in advance.

・In principle, we cannot accept children under the fifth grade of elementary school.

・There are many cases where you will be seated together. Please be careful not to be late.

・The experience time is about 1.5 hours, including the time to hand over the equipment.

・The experience fee is paid at the store on the day.

・Cash, card, and electronic money (PayPay, transportation IC, etc.) can be used.

・If you are more than 15 minutes late, your reservation may be canceled.

・If you use reading glasses, please be sure to bring them with you.

*Of the three types of bases, the “kanzashi” is used by inserting it into tied up hair and does not have any fixing power by itself.

The shape of the “kanzashi” will change from January 2022.
