Moomin Valley in Saitama: A Dreamlike Adventure

Located outside of Tokyo, deep within the peaceful Saitama Prefecture is a wonderland that brings life into your favourite Moomin characters in ways unimaginable: Moomin Valley.  Drawing inspiration from the iconic characters created by Tove Jansson, this theme park invites its guests to step inside the pages of a storybook. But what is more exciting for all Moomin fans worldwide is that they need not go as far as Finland to experience the magic of Moominland (well, unless you live on that side of the hemisphere of course); there is one right here in Japan.  The experience had been unforgettable for me, and a major part of it was the Moomin House tour. The details were so well done that it would appear that the Moomins themselves could just pop into the house after a moment or two. Below are my personal favourite moments at the theme park in detail. 

Moomin House Tour: An Intricate Journey

For me, one of the real highlights of visiting Moomin Valley Park in Saitama was definitely going on the Moomin House tour. Given how much I’ve always enjoyed Tove Jansson’s fantasy stories, this was the truly exciting opportunity to enter the house of the world renowned Moomins. The house was designed in incredible detail to a surreal effect. Each room, from kitchen to living area, had the most charming touches, really so authentically created as though the Moomins had gone out for just a little while on some sort of adventure. It is an exceptionally magical experience to be allowed to wander through their little world, full of the unique atmosphere instantly recognisable by fans of the Moomin stories.

Moomin Valley After Dark: A Spooky Magic

As the sun goes down, Moomin Valley magic characterises a mysterious, almost spooky atmosphere. It gets creepy yet rather fascinating during the night time. Smoke machines emit thick, swirling mist that clings to the ground, spider webs draping the trees, and ominous tree carvings with twisted faces staring from the bark, transforming the friendly surroundings into a spooky, unsettling landscape. The most astonishing views could probably be viewed around Snufkin’s tent when the tender lighting makes it seem like thousands of fireflies flutter around the woods. Such a mix of glowing lights and the atmosphere of twilight creates an unforgettable mystical experience. It’s as if you’ve entered a Moomin story after dark, where the characters could appear at any moment.

The Welcome Gate

Upon arrival, the welcome gate of Moomin Valley Park is a must stop photo spot for its design, featuring a page of a Moomin storybook. The entrance is so well designed and coloured that it lures visitors into a magical world that awaits them inside. It’s a perfect spot to start an adventure, and it makes for a picture-perfect memory of your visit.

Oshun Oxtra: 4D Cinematic Adventure

Besides that, another must-see in Moomin Valley Park is the show of Oshun Oxtra. This 4D cinema fully throws you into the world of the Moomins, with projections, sound effects, and motion that make you feel like being part of the story. And so these are actually interactive parts contributing much to Moomins exciting show and creating such a magical touch in this park. Suddenly you find yourself just inside any Moomins’ adventure. 

Zipline and the Playground

Although we didn’t get to experience the zipline because we went after sunset. Zipline will give one the great adrenaline of flying above this beautiful landscape of Moomin Valley. Not to mention, families with children will have their fair share as well: playgrounds and fun areas like everywhere in the park will amuse kids of any age. This is a place where families come together to make memories together. 

Moomin Themed Food

While doing the rounds in Moomin Valley Park, don’t miss out on trying Moomin-themed food. Be it small Moomin-shaped desserts or creative dishes planned with the characters in mind, there is something for every palate. It is such a sweet way to refuel between the adventures and be still in the Land of Fantasy that is Moomin.

A Playground for All Ages

Moomin Valley Park is not for kids alone. It is one giant playground even for adults. The entire valley is built for greater imagination, from the lighthouse, to the playground or even the arcades, there is something at every turn. We were also lucky enough to witness their firework show at night which is held a few times a year. Whether you’re climbing through the playful treehouses or exploring valleys and hills, this is indeed a place that encourages you to let your inner child out, no matter your age. This is an adventure that lets you experience Moomin Valley in a way you never have. A short drive away is the Tove Jansson Children’s park which is also a must visit for Moomin lovers.
