Tokachidake Bogakudai is an attractive place where you can enjoy different scenery throughout the four seasons. In summer, many climbers gather here as a base for mountain climbing around Mt. Tokachidake, where you can encounter alpine plants that bloom at high altitudes and wild animals such as Ezon pikas. In autumn, the area around Bogakudai is beautifully colored by the autumn leaves of Japanese pines and white birches, and from late September to early October, you can enjoy the fantastic scenery of the autumn leaves spreading at the base of the mountains and the first snowfall.

It is approximately 40 minutes by car from JR Biei Station, and is close to Aoiike and Shirokane Onsen, so you can easily stop by as part of your sightseeing route. Bogakudai has a rest house and a parking lot, and there is a promenade that is about 1.1km long and takes about 45 minutes, so even families can enjoy a walk. There are also spots with local ties, such as Miura Bridge, named by Ayako Miura.

The “Tokachidake Bogakudai Disaster Prevention Shelter” has been installed at Bogakudai, and it functions as a facility for evacuation from volcanic blocks caused by sudden eruptions. The shelter is equipped with emergency supplies, food, and a generator, and can serve as a temporary accommodation if immediate rescue is not possible.

Furthermore, there is a large monitor that displays volcanic activity and weather information in real time, and restrooms and evacuation spaces are available 24 hours a day, so you can feel safe in the event of an emergency. However, please note that this facility is closed during the winter (late December to late April).

Tokachidake Bogakudai is one of Hokkaido’s best sightseeing spots where you can enjoy magnificent natural scenery such as an active volcano emitting smoke, vast autumn leaves, and snowy landscapes in winter. You can also feel the history of volcanic activity, and the power of nature is alive in the land where rugged lava flows remain. When visiting the Furano/Biei area, we recommend a stop at Bogakudai, where you can experience the breath of Mt. Tokachi while enjoying the magnificent scenery.
