It was once used as a light railway exclusively for Oji Paper, but is now open to the public as a pedestrian bridge where visitors can enjoy the historic scenery while crossing freely.

This valuable Double Warren Bridge was imported from England during the Meiji period, and was designed by British engineer Ponnard. The bridge was used by the Hokkaido Government Railway in 1899, but it was unable to cope with the increase in traffic and was moved to Lake Shikotsu around 1923. Due to its historical value, it was designated as a tangible cultural property by Chitose City in 1999.

The Yamasen Railway Bridge blends in with the scenery of Lake Shikotsu, allowing you to enjoy its different beauty depending on the season. During the fresh green season, the bright greenery and vermilion of the bridge stand out against the blue sky, creating a landscape that looks like a painting. In autumn, the trees along the lake turn red and yellow, and the colors of the bridge and autumn leaves overlap beautifully, creating a spectacular view that is perfect for photos. In winter, the bridge and its surrounding area are covered with snow, creating a romantic atmosphere in a world of silver. At night, the vermilion bridge is illuminated by street lights, giving off a magical glow, making for a romantic moment.

There is a water park under the Yamasen Railway Bridge, and if you go down to the lakeside, you can feel the clear blue water of Lake Shikotsu up close. The lake is highly transparent, and on sunny days, the blue of the mountains and sky are reflected in the lake’s surface. There are walking paths within the water park, so you can enjoy nature to the fullest while walking along the lake. We recommend taking a leisurely stroll along the waterfront and spending some quiet time enjoying the views of the lake.
