An oasis in the park where you can visit the creatures.
Kyoto Aquarium is located in Umekoji Park, which is surrounded by forests and lawns. This is a special aquarium where you can feel a deep connection with living things and nature. I was surprised by the power of dolphins. I was impressed by the personalities of the penguins. If you see a creature that interests you, please talk to the breeding staff. We will share special information with our passion for living things. An important theme of the Kyoto Aquarium is the coexistence of life through the blessings of Kyoto’s water, such as exhibits of giant salamanders that have lived since ancient times and recreations of “Satoyama”.
A place where you always want to take a detour, like an oasis in your life. There are new discoveries every time I come. Get well. You can feel gentle. I hope you feel that way.
A place where we can bring our hearts closer together and understand each other better. We want to be that kind of aquarium. The distance between customers and living things, the distance between them and the staff, and the distance between them and someone who came with them. We believe that whenever we approach something, it is an entrance to a new world. Our hearts have become closer than before we came to Kyoto Aquarium. We aim to create a space that makes you feel that way.

At the Exchange Plaza, we saw coral reef creatures such as Chinese eel, western eel, and clownfish. The newly renovated “Mittete” has a variety of new exhibits in addition to the exhibits of coral reef creatures that you have seen so far. We have changed the name of the area to “Mittete” with the hope that you will be able to observe many creatures, take a closer look at the new exhibits, and learn more about Kyoto Aquarium.
As part of its “AQTION!” activities, the Kyoto Aquarium regularly holds workshops on the theme of living creatures that even small children can participate in.
Mitette has expanded its workshop space, which provides opportunities for interaction and learning, and has become a space where you can enjoy an even wider range of experiences than ever before.

① “STAFF STATION” filled with the care of the breeding staff
A display shelf is now available that shows the care staff’s commitment and love for creatures. “STAFF STATION” has a locker-shaped layout inspired by a staff waiting room or backyard, and you can open the door and look inside freely.
For example, when you open one of the lockers, you’ll see seal hair on display. Seal hair collected during the annual molting period. A variety of items are on display, including things related to living things that you don’t usually get to see up close, and favorite items that the zoo staff usually collects or wears. Please open your locker and enjoy.
② “Workshop Tree” where you can feel the history of Kyoto Aquarium
The first thing you see in Mitette is the Workshop Tree. Since the Kyoto Aquarium opened in 2012, we have exhibited representative works from various workshops held within the museum.
The workshop’s commitment to creating a mask with the front face of a creature you’ve never seen before, and the “ratgara stamp” where you can enjoy stamping a creature’s pattern, while watching the craftsmanship, will teach you about the creatures at Kyoto Aquarium. You can feel the history.
③Report on AQTION! activities at Kyoto Aquarium
At Kyoto Aquarium, we are working with children and local communities to carry out the “AQTION!” activity to pass the baton to the future of the earth. A shelf has been added to Mitete where you can find out more about our AQTION! activities.
We report on a wide variety of activities held inside and outside the museum, such as workshops, on-site classes, and satoyama classes. Please take a look at the columns on our homepage, where we introduce in detail about the activities that catch your attention when you look at the shelves.

“Jellyfish Wonder” has an area of approximately 350 square meters, and you can experience the mysterious world of jellyfish that live while floating in the sea. The exhibit begins with an exhibition of the process by which moon jellyfish change their appearance and grow, and continues to “GURURI,” a 360-degree panoramic aquarium filled with approximately 1,500 moon jellyfish. In addition, we have opened the “Kyoto Jellyfish Research Department”, a space where breeding staff will be able to show the breeding and research of jellyfish that they carry out every day in the backyard, so that people can not only admire the jellyfish, but also rediscover the charm of the mysterious jellyfish.
In addition, for the jellyfish on display, there will be a panel display of the “Jellyfish Character Diagnosis” that lets you know which jellyfish are the same type as you, and the “Jellyfish Wonder Illustrated Encyclopedia” that describes the jellyfish’s names, characteristics, and the thoughts of the breeding staff. You can learn while having fun.

Since its opening, the Kyoto Aquarium has been participating in surveys and research on giant salamanders in the Kamogawa water system, led by Kyoto City’s Cultural Properties Protection Division and Kyoto University’s Nishikawa Laboratory, and cooperating as a breeding facility for protected individuals.
In September 2022, we opened a new exhibition corner “Giant Salamander, Lord of the Kamogawa River” in the “Kyoto River” area.
Where does the giant salamander live? What does it look like? what are you eating?
In addition, we are devising exhibits to draw more interest in giant salamanders, such as the issue of hybrid animals created by cross-breeding of native species endemic to Japan and non-native species.
Kyoto Aquarium will continue to carry out various activities to provide visitors with opportunities to get a close look at the giant salamander, learn about its characteristics, and think about the fascination of living things and the importance of the natural environment around us.

We would like to inform you that the “Kyoto Penguin Correlation Chart 2024″, which summarizes the personalities and relationships of penguins, will be published on a special website and will be exhibited in the museum from Wednesday, December 13, 2023. Additionally, starting this year, the English version will be published on a special website. The “Penguin Relationship Chart”* is created in the hope that people will learn about the ecology of penguins, which have individuality and sociability just like humans, and the diverse relationships between penguins and their breeding staff that change from year to year depending on their individuality. , which started production in 2018 and is updated every year, this year marks its 6th edition.
Care staff observe the behavior of the 60 Cape Penguins living at Kyoto Aquarium every day, and display the latest information on each individual’s personality and changes in romantic relationships on large panels. This is a correlation diagram unique to Kyoto Aquarium that goes beyond a family tree to introduce each individual, including their appearance, personality, distinctive abilities and behavior, and relationships between parents and children and siblings. This information is only known by the breeding staff who have been observing the animals for many years, such as a childhood friend couple who overcame a turbulent love affair, and a penguin who has retired from being a fighting leader and is completely retiring.
