    Touch one’s sensibilities

It is from this concept that the name Nifrel was derived.
A small flower on the roadside, a ladybug, a cloud floating in the sky, the setting sun, the smell after a shower, the sound of rain…I think everyone has memories of being moved by the natural phenomena and small creatures around them. Our hope is that the Nifrel experience will stimulate such sensibilities, deepen your interest in living things and nature, and help you realize small things in your daily life.

“Experience new sensibilities at Nifrel, a “living museum” both day and night.”

Nifrel is a new genre of museum produced by Kaiyukan aquarium. You can intuitively enjoy the charm of living things and nature through a space where the color of the entire room changes gradually and where you can see living things moving freely right in front of your eyes.

    The exhibition theme is diversity.

All living things, including humans, are fascinating because they are diverse and unique. With this in mind, Nifrel has organized its exhibition area around the theme of diversity. Iro (color diversity), Waza (behavior diversity), Hidden (mimicry diversity), etc. We hope that discovering the charm of the small creatures that live in Nifrel will lead to a mutual appreciation of the individuality of all living things, including humans.

    Zone 1 Touch the colors
A world where colors change slowly. Colorful red, blue, and yellow fish swim in 13 beautifully clear aquariums. Which color are you captivated by the beauty of?

    Zone 2 Experience the techniques
It sprays water, hides in the sand, and changes color to match its surroundings. The curator will provide easy-to-understand explanations in the aquarium, which has been designed so that you can see up close the original techniques of the creatures.

    zone 3 Experience swimming
Fish float weightlessly in the clear water, waving and flapping their wings. The shadow of a beautiful wave spreads out from a single drop of water. We create a space using shadows to highlight the diverse “swimming”. The idea is that by using a simple, single color called shadow, the behavior of living things, such as swimming, can be highlighted. For example, the black shadow of a tadpole swimming in a rice field. The sun’s rays cast clear shadows on the smooth mud surface, and you can naturally draw attention to their “swimming” behavior by twisting their entire bodies. Furthermore, by projecting the beautiful water ripples created by water droplets onto the ceiling and walls, we hope to create a feeling of coexistence with the world of water where living things live. The artistic space where the shadows of the fish swimming and the ripples in the water overlap invites you to a mysterious experience.

    Zone 4 Wonder Moments
A sphere with a diameter of 5 meters and a circular screen with a diameter of 8 meters spreading out at your feet. A mysterious spatial art experience created by artist Takahiro Matsuo that feels like gazing at the stars from space. Water sculptures, flowers, trees, the universe, etc. are drawn on the sphere, and a shower of light falls on you. Program: WATER/SENSE OF NATURE/PHENOMENON/UNIVERSE, etc. 25 scenes Running time approximately 15 minutes

    Zone 5 Hidden Touch
It changes its appearance to match its environment and background, allowing it to approach prey unnoticed or protect itself from enemies. Some animals hide by blending into their surrounding environment by resembling tree branches and leaves, others hide from predators by resembling poisonous creatures in appearance and behavior, and children are completely different from adults. We will exhibit unique creatures that have mastered their ability to hide, such as ones that hide and hide to avoid getting caught up in fights between adults. Experience the ability of living things to hide in order to survive in nature in a space that is modeled after the patterns of living things.

Zone 6 Experience Touch the water

In a wide, open space filled with light, the large animals that live in the water will greet you with great excitement. The unique ecology not only on land but also in the clear water will continue to amaze and impress you.

    Zone 7 Experience the movement
This is a playground for living things. Living things that come and go across a single stream. The area up to the stream is where we humans can interfere. I’m excited about this new experience where I can feel free-spirited movement.

    Zone 8 Feel the connection
Powerful three-dimensional images are projected on two screens, one on the wall and one on the floor. Things that are the same as us and living things may feel close to us, and things that are different may be interesting. Find the “connection” within you.

Attention to detail in design to “touch your sensibilities” ~ Just like enjoying art ~

Nifrel is a “living museum” that combines an aquarium, zoo, and art museum to enrich the sensibilities of a wide range of generations, from children to adults. While Kaiyukan exhibits dynamically reproduce the environment in large aquariums and allow you to experience nature, Nifrel focuses on the individuality of living things and has devised various techniques that allow you to intuitively feel the charm of each creature. I would like to introduce some of them.

    space
Many zoos and aquariums organize each zone into a region or climate category (for example, Seto Inland Sea or Savannah). However, at Nifrel, diversity is the exhibition theme, and zones are constructed based on individual characteristics such as color and form. In order for those who step into the exhibition to feel the theme from the space, the characteristics of each zone are expressed throughout the space using a technique called “installation”, which is used in contemporary art.

    Water
At Nifrel, we are particular about water quality so that living things can live comfortably. Fish that live in seawater and creatures that live in freshwater. Invertebrates such as jellyfish and sea anemones are especially sensitive to changes in water quality, so daily water quality tests are essential. In addition, we maintain the highest level of transparency possible so that you can see the unique underwater ecology of large animals such as saltwater crocodiles and mini hippos. Each water environment is different, and we manage it using the strict standards cultivated at Kaiyukan.

    Aquarium
Small aquariums displaying fish, shrimp, crabs, etc. are dotted around the exhibition room with the idea of swimming freely in the sea and encountering creatures in various places (in aquariums, aquariums are generally built into the walls). target). Most aquariums do not have lids so that you can experience the creatures directly rather than through glass. Small waves form on the water surface, and the light that shines through the waves casts shadows on the sandy bottom, and creatures swim freely within them. It’s like meeting all kinds of fish in the same shared space! is.

    Shape
〇△□There are various forms in our lives. The shape based on 〇 is a very strong shape, and the human body is often made of cylinders. The cross sections of the arms, legs, and torso are o-shaped. Also, although □ is very common in human life, □ is not common in nature because it has a shape that easily collapses. Also, the hexagonal shape is also known as a honeycomb structure and is famous for its honeycomb structure, but it is said to be the most effective shape for being impact resistant and filling the surface without gaps.
Inspired by the fun of shapes, each zone is designed with a basic shape, such as 〇 for touching colors, □ for touching shapes, and hexagons for touching movements.

    Light
There are various types of light in the exhibition, including light that creates the entire space, light that illuminates signs, and light (video) from projectors. Among these, we choose the light that illuminates the inside of the aquarium in a way that most faithfully and beautifully shows the living creatures. From his experience diving from the North Pole to various tropical seas, Director Obata felt that the sandy soil of tropical seas at a depth of about 1 meter is where living things look most beautiful, with good colors and clear shapes. After repeated experiments in an aquarium, we created lighting with a color temperature and intensity close to that image.

    Sound
Music for each zone, animal voices, water sounds, and human conversations. All are important elements that make up the space. The music in each zone is original (with some exceptions) created with the theme of diversity, the unique creatures on display, and the entire space in mind.
