If you look west from Kita Sanjo Dori in Sapporo, you will see the former Hokkaido Government Office main building appearing imposingly at the end. The brick building, nicknamed the “Red Brick Government Building,” is a historic building that served as the prefecture’s government for approximately 80 years until the new building currently in use was built.

Built in 1888 (Meiji 21), it is an American-style neo-baroque building, with distorted glass made in the Meiji era, making you feel as if you have traveled back in time.
The inside of the museum is open to the public for free, and materials tracing the history of Hokkaido are on display, so be sure to stop by.
Don’t forget to check out the surrounding gourmet spots you’d like to enjoy after your walk.
The museum is closed until March 2020 due to renovation work.

It’s a place that you’ll want to visit again and again, as it has a different look each season, with cherry blossoms and lilacs in the spring, lush greenery and lilacs in the summer, and autumn leaves in the fall. It is also a popular photo spot among local residents.

The “Old Hokkaido Government Office Building” is made of approximately 2.5 million bricks. The building has a “Goryo star”, the symbol of the Kaitakushi, so be sure to check it out.
When you enter the building, it’s like you’ve traveled back in time! We recommend taking a commemorative photo in the entrance hall with its red carpet. You can also learn about Hokkaido’s history through a diorama that recreates the city of Sapporo during the Meiji period and paintings about the development of Hokkaido. Among them, the 26-division map of Hokkaido created by Takeshiro Matsuura, the father of the name “Hokkaido”, is worth seeing!
