    About Jozankei

Jozankei Onsen is located 26km south of downtown Sapporo in less than an hour by car.
Located within Shikotsu-Toya National Park, it is visited by approximately 2.4 million people annually as a hot spring resort in a lush valley.

    This is Shikotsu-Toya National Park

Jozankei Onsen is located in Sapporo city and is inside a national park.
Shikotsu-Toya National Park is home to Japan’s two largest caldera lakes, Lake Shikotsu and Lake Toya, as well as volcanoes such as Mt. Tarumae, Mt. Yotei, and Mt. Usu, hot springs scattered throughout the area, and a hellhole where sulfur gas spews out. This national park is characterized by its topography and phenomena created by volcanic activity.

Among them, the Jozankei area is located along the Toyohira River and is a representative hot spring area in Hokkaido, about 26 km south of Sapporo and about an hour’s drive. The area has mountain topography created by volcanoes such as Mt. Muion, Mt. Soranumadake, and Mt. Sapporo, and the mountains are rich in nature, with alpine plants growing there. While protecting this nature, we want as many people as possible to experience the beauty of nature.

Water quality of Jozankei Onsen: Enjoy the blessings of the forest and the earth

Jozankei Onsen is a high-quality natural hot spring.
The hot springs that gush out in the Jozankei hot spring town are sodium chloride springs (neutral hypotonic high temperature springs) that are clear, colorless, and have a mellow, salty taste, and are one of the most popular types of hot springs in Japan. When you take a bath, this salt adheres to your skin, preventing sweat from evaporating and warming you from the core of your body.

History of Jozankei Onsen: Keio 2nd year

The source of the spring where the Shugen monk Biizumi Jozan met.
Jozankei has a long history, dating back to 1866, when the Shugen monk Biizumi Jozan encountered the source of the spring while being guided by the Ainu people.

This area was named “Jozankei” in recognition of Jozan’s achievements in overcoming numerous hardships and building the foundation of the hot springs. Even after Jozan’s death, the town continued to develop thanks to its blessed natural environment and abundant high-quality hot springs, and in 1996, the 130th anniversary of the opening of the hot springs, it was declared a “health resort.”
The hot springs that Jozan continued to protect continue to gently soothe people’s minds and bodies even today.
