Majestic nature and panoramic views typical of Hokkaido

Although located in Sapporo, a city of 2 million people,
A scenic spot where you can see the idyllic scenery typical of Hokkaido and the vast Ishikari Plain.
The reason why this kind of “Hokkaido-like scenery” remained is that
There is a history related to this place.

This is because Hitsujigaoka was created as an agricultural research facility.
In 1906, it was developed as a Tsukisamu cattle ranch by the Ministry of Agriculture and Commerce.
Hitsujigaoka is the agricultural research site of the Hokkaido Agricultural Research Center of the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization, Daiwa House Premist Dome (formerly Sapporo Dome), and
It is operated and managed by the Sapporo Hitsujigaoka Observation Deck, and even today, the magnificent scenery and idyllic scenery remain.

    Enjoy the scenery

Even though it is located in Sapporo, a city of 2 million people, Hitsujigaoka Observatory has a pastoral and majestic landscape.
The scenery looks different in “spring,” “summer,” “autumn,” and “winter.”

Spring: Hokkaido has ended its long winter. The light green grass emerges from the snow and a fresh breeze spreads across the ground.

Summer: Hokkaido’s summer is refreshing and easy to spend.
At Hitsujigaoka Observatory, lavender fields spread out as far as the eye can see.

Autumn: Hokkaido’s short autumn. Hitsujigaoka Observatory turns beautiful red from October to November.
In addition, various autumn flavor events decorate the observatory during this period.

Winter: Hokkaido’s long winter. A pure white carpet of snow spreads across Hitsujigaoka Observatory.
At the Snow Park that opens during this period, you can enjoy Hokkaido’s snow, including making numerous snowmen and snow igloos.

    Enjoying Food

When you think of Hokkaido, you think of “Genghis Khan.”
After seeing the magnificent scenery of Sapporo, enjoy some Genghis Khan.
Genghis Khan is a famous Hokkaido local dish where lamb meat and vegetables are grilled together in a special pot.
The lamb meat used in Genghis Khan is rich in unsaturated fatty acids that help reduce cholesterol, and has fewer calories than beef, so it is also recommended for women and those concerned about high blood pressure.

Enjoy fresh lamb meat and vegetables in the great outdoors with your friends, family, and close friends.

    “Father of Hokkaido Development”
    William Smith Clark

In July 1876, Dr. Clark was invited by Hokkaido Development Commissioner Kuroda Kiyotaka to be the first vice principal of the Sapporo Agricultural College (now Hokkaido University) to train future leaders in Hokkaido development.
He had a great influence on the first class of 16 students, teaching them zoology, botany, and Christian morality in English. He stayed in Sapporo for just over eight months after arriving in Hokkaido, but on April 16, 1877, Dr. Clark is said to have shouted his famous farewell words, “Boys, be ambitious,” from horseback in Shimamatsu (Kitahiroshima City) with his students. These words have been passed down to future generations as the very representative words of the Hokkaido development spirit.

“Hitsujigaoka Observatory” and “Statue of Dr. Clark”
    Statue of Dr. Clark

Originally, the statue of Dr. Clark was only a bust on the grounds of Hokkaido University (hereafter Hokkaido University), but the number of tourists who came to Hokkaido University to see the famous poplar-lined street and the bust increased year by year, resulting in what is known as tourist pollution. As a result, in 1973, the Hokkaido University authorities restricted tourist buses from entering the campus, claiming that they were hindering academic research.

However, the statue of Dr. Clark had already become a symbol of tourism in Sapporo at that time, and the Sapporo Tourism Association, concerned about the situation in which tourists could not see the statue, planned to erect a new statue of Dr. Clark at Hitsujigaoka Observatory, with the desire to convey the frontier spirit, which can be said to be the origin of Hokkaido’s development, to the whole country, and obtained Hokkaido University’s approval.
Professor Saka Tandou of Hokkaido Women’s Junior College was asked to create a new Clark statue. Based on the theme of “Clark on the Hill,” Saka created the statue with the image of Dr. Clark wearing a frock coat fluttering in the early spring breeze, raising his right hand and shouting “Boys be ambitious.” The raised right hand is said to point to “eternal truth far away.”

On April 16, 1976, the unveiling ceremony for the Dr. William Smith Clark statue “Clark on the Hill” was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Hokkaido University’s founding and the 200th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. This year marked the 100th anniversary of Dr. Clark’s visit to Hokkaido, and it was also the day 100 years ago when the farewell words “Boys be ambitious” were shouted in Shimamatsu.
