    Bear Mountain Information

In 1955, the Noboribetsu Bear Farm was established out of a sense of crisis that brown bears would become extinct due to extermination policies.
Since 1989, conservation policy has changed, and the environment surrounding brown bears has also changed.
In 2006, we showed how brown bears live in an environment as close to the wild as possible in the vast forests of Hokkaido.
Bear Mountain was created as an unprecedented nature observation facility that you can experience first-hand.
Just like the great nature of Hokkaido! Walk and feel the brown bear forest and feel the origin of rich nature.

Brown bears are in danger of extinction

The Daisetsu Mountain Range, including Mt. Sahoro, and the Hidaka Mountain Range are also habitats for Ezo brown bears, but their numbers are on the decline.
In the Red Data Book of the Ministry of the Environment, individuals from western Ishikari (Shakotan/Eniwa area) are listed.
In addition to this, the Hokkaido version of the Red Data Book also includes populations from the Teshio and Mashike areas.
It is listed as a “Locally Endangered Population (LP).”
It is also listed in the Appendix to the CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora).
It is internationally recognized as a rare species.
Let’s think together about what we can do to prevent Ezo brown bears from becoming extinct in the wild.

To coexist with (and avoid encountering) brown bears

Coexistence with humans is a prerequisite for preventing extinction.
The first condition is to let bears know of your presence so that they don’t interact with each other.
By doing so, timid bears will not approach humans.
…But bears are very smart, so if you get close to a human even once, you’ll receive something delicious!
(They learn that giving food and leaving garbage on the mountain = human smell and presence = delicious).

If that happens, the bear will turn into a bad bear (wenkamui) who approaches humans on its own.
Mountains are where bears live. That’s where we humans are in the way.
It is important to understand and act accordingly.
Let’s think about what we can do now to prevent Wenkamuy from increasing any further!

    To summarize…

You can’t go into the mountains alone.
Make a sound to announce your presence. (bell, whistle, radio, etc.)
Always take your trash home with you.
If you see any signs of a bear, turn back immediately.
If you see a bear, don’t approach it.
Please follow the above and keep in mind that if you see a bear, never approach it.
If you run into a bear in the mountains
To avoid arousing the bear, slowly walk away without turning your head away.

    Introducing the bear

The brown bear is the largest land animal living in Japan, and is a large mammal that only lives in Hokkaido.
“Carnivora, Bear family, Bear genus, Brown bear subspecies” Ezo brown bears are divided into three genetic types (Northern Hokkaido type, Eastern Hokkaido type, and Southern Hokkaido type).
They are thought to have migrated from North America, Siberia, and Mongolia, respectively.
Bear Mountain is a place where you can meet Ezo brown bears (Kimun Kamuy).
